Stranded In Texas, Come Visit

Somebody rescue me! I have been trapped in my home for nearly two weeks.

The engine to my SUV blew up. It was a complete shock, and we still don't know what happened. The dealer has it in their shop and now we are waiting to hear from them.

I should have known better than to believe the Service Department when they told me it would only be a week.

So now I am waiting to hear how much poorer I'll be and how much longer I'll have to muddle without a vehicle.

I've had plenty to keep me busy around here, but it also means I've been
neglecting my chiropractor visits. It also means I haven't gotten out to buy the Prize for the Blog Shout Out contest.

I'm trying to think of things that are lightweight. The last time I mailed a prize out (to the Netherlands), it was stupendously expensive. This time, I want to plan a
head. There are plenty of lighter weight goodies that are tres cool, yet Texan.

Greg is coming back this weekend and I hope to buy a few items for the prize package then.

In other news, James Garcia awarded me the Versatile Blogger award. I'm supposed to name fifteen other bloggers noted for Versatility, but I had another idea. Anyone who reads this, chime in.

Post in the comments one random thing about yourself. And then carry the torch to your blog and list six more.
The weirder the better. (I don't want to feel alone.)

As for seven random things about me, here goes:
  1. English is my second language.
  2. I haven't spoken my first language in so long, it takes me a couple of weeks of hearing it to converse intelligently again.
  3. My curiosity is greater than my fear of failure.
  4. The only thing I have ever failed to learn was how to swim. (I swim like a rock.)
  5. I love to laugh.
  6. I never met a dog I didn't like--their owners are sometimes a different matter.
  7. 1:26 was my fastest time at Mahjong. When I started writing, I gave it up cold turkey. I have never played since.
So how about you? Tell me one random thing about yourself.

--something tells me this could be turned into a drinking game.

WOW.... Lookie! I'm the first comment! That's never happened before.

I'm so sorry you're without a vehicle. We own three, one of which stays parked most of the time, for just that reason... so neither of us have to go without when one is out of commission.

Postage costs are why I tend to stick to gift certificates anymore. And, who doesn't want a GC to Amazon or Barnes and Noble?

Randomness?

Um...

When I have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, both toppings MUST be spread all the way to the edges -- NO EXCEPTIONS.

I had a friend who used to slop hers on, mostly in the middle and I swear, it gave me the shakes.

I suspect I'm borderline OCD...

If I remember, I'll do this on my blog tomorrow.

Ref:...spread all the way to the edges...

LOL. Okay, now I don't feel so weird. That was a good one.

Ref: GCs
It may come to that, but I really wanted to send something with a local flavor.

I love getting stuff from other parts of the country(world)

I feel your pain about your car. Ours died on the way to Sithboy's soccer game (he's the goalie, they lost horribly).

As for one the weird thing...this is more embarrasing, but I used to have a habit of smelling my food before I put it in my mouth. Every meal, every day.

I will post more weirdness on my blog. :P

Congrats on the versatile blogger award.

My weirdness is that I have food rules.

Sorry about your car.

I was once mugged in Paris in broad daylight in front of Notre-Dame. And yet I'd go back in a heartbeat. Go figure.
Maria Zannini said…
Marianne, JL and Dru:

This is wild. I never knew people had so many food issues.

Though my husband will tell you I probably have quite a few of my own.

I won't kiss him if he has rootbeer taste on his breath. LOL.

I hope you all will post more on your blogs. I'll come visit.
Maria Zannini said…
Liz: OMG! That's terrible.

Was anyone hurt?

I've had friends who were mugged in broad daylight. It happened so fast they didn't have time to react.

Paris must have been very special. I don't know that I'd want to go back if I were mugged. (Not unless I got one good sock in at least. LOL)
Liz Fichera said…
Maria, The only one who was hurt was me. It could have been worse, had it not been for a few kind folks who stopped to assist.

Anyway, you've inspired me this morning! I started a Random Acts of Weirdness post on my blog this morning. Gotta do something to pass the time in this heat! ;-) Hope you get your car back soon!
Maria Zannini said…
Liz, I'm on my way.

Sorry you got hurt in that mugging. How awful!
Lydia Kang said…
congrats on your award! And I'm sorry about the car. But I guess you can get a lot of writing done while you wait!

Random fact? I can turn tie maraschino cherry stems into knots in my mouth.

Lydia:

Ref: ...cherry stems into knots...

I don't have to tell you how popular that makes you.

I can't even curl my tongue.
One random thing about me? Well, from your last name, my guess is that I probably speak your first language...is it Italian? And if I'm wrong, then since you're a Texan, there's a good chance you're originally a Spanish speaker, in which case I still speak your first language! I actually speak Spanish muuuuch better than I speak Italian ;-)

Since we're sharing lots of food random thoughts, I absolutely must cut the crusts off my sandwich :)

I was beaten in Scrabble by a Swedish girl who had only recently learnt English. I haven't played since.

Wendy:

I married into the name, though I probably know more Italian than he does.

Both my parents are Mexican. They lived in Chicago, but as it was my mother's first pregnancy, she wanted to be by her mother when her time came to deliver me.

That's how I ended up being born in Texas--and why I came back as soon as I could.
Maria Zannini said…
Joanne:

My kid brother does that! I always laugh watching a grown man cut the crusts off his bread.
Maria Zannini said…
Mike:

Ouch! That scares me. You have a better vocabulary than I do. Was there drinking involved?
Mike Keyton said…
Was there drinking involved?

Bugger. That's where I went wrong!
Once upon a time, I won a pig calling contest. And I've never owned pigs.

I'll post more random weirdness tonight and link back here. Hope you're getting some interesting blog links in your email for the contest.

Marguerite:

LOL! I don't even know how to respond to that.

And yes, I'm loving it! I am seeing new-to-me blogs so that's been an extra bonus.

Mike: Tsk, tsk, tsk. You know better than to tackle word contests sober. :)

P.S.:I'm sorry to hear of your troubles. I hope you get your wheels back soon.

Geez, I'm sorry you're engine blew up and left you stranded. That stinks!

Random odd fact, m'kay. Lately I've needed to mark the quarter, middle, and 3/4 points of each book before I start reading. This is not optional, it's become necessary to the entire "ritual" of reading. Don't axe me why, 'cause I don't know. :)
Maria Zannini said…
James: It might have been more interesting if there had been liquor involved. Who knows what we could have found out about people.

Okay, that is weird. But I've come to expect weird from you. That's what gives you your charm. ;o)

Sorry about your car! It's dreadful to be without transportation.

Weird fact: I usually fall asleep in less than a minute of closing my eyes at night. (Sometimes much less... like 10 seconds.) If it takes longer, I get really annoyed about it! I tell my Highlander it's because I sleep the sleep of the innocent!
broken biro said…
Ooh this is fun! Glad I stopped by!

I would be more sympathetic about you being stranded in your own home if I hadn't just been reading 'Left for Dead in The Outback for 71 Days'... ;-P

Random fact: I can recite Hamlet's soliloquy from memory (for no good reasons) - this is why I am so rarely invited to parties.
Maria Zannini said…
India:

Ref: I usually fall asleep in less than a minute...

Okay, it's official. I hate you. LOL! I envy people who can fall asleep quickly.

As for the innocent stuff...well that might explain a few things about me.

I will have to tell my hubby about that. He can fall asleep standing up. --though I have my doubts about his innocence.
Maria Zannini said…
Brokenbiro:

So it's not as bad Left For Dead. But I don't care. I'm trapped. Alone. With no human contact except for people who want money from me.

That's got to be worth something.

um...we'll just put you next to the punch bowl. That way no one will notice.

Hello! Sorry to hear you have been stuck where you are - hope your car gets sorted soon. And let's see, a random fact about me... when I was little I wanted to grow up and be a cat. I have a feeling that the older I get the less I will be impressed with wishing for whiskers.
Maria Zannini said…
Hiya Jane and welcome!

Ref: whiskers

Definitely. By the time you reach sixty you're going to wish that hair was on your head and not under your nose. LOL.

But I think it's sweet that you wanted to be a cat when you were little.

I have an award for you at my blog, btw!

I am a new reader and am so happy to have wandered upon your blog - such a breath of fresh air. Thank you.

Weird fact: For the first 15 years or so of my marriage I had a recurring nightmare about losing my wedding ring. The nightmares completely stopped after one night when I woke up and told my husband I’d had the same dream and he said “You know, even if you lost your ring, we’d still be married.”

And, kayaking is one of my favorite things to do in the whole world but I don't like swimming or even being in the water. Weird.
Maria Zannini said…
Hi Stacy! Welcome!

Your husband is so sweet. It's neat that dream went away after he reassured you.

I am fascinated by dreams--especially recurrent ones.

Ref: water
I believe you! I love fishing off a boat, even while the rest of me is as worried as a turkey before Thanksgiving.

Thanks for stopping in!
