First Egg

We interrupt our normal programming to show you our FIRST egg.

We're so proud.

What's even more interesting is that I think the hen who laid it was my poor 'victim' chicken, the one everyone was picking on.

I've got some more pictures to show you next week. Greg built a very nice set of nest boxes that turned out tres cute. He just made it, so the chickens haven't had a chance to lay in them yet.

I wasn't planning on posting today, but I just had to crow. LOL!

Congratulations! It looks just like you! (sorry, couldn't resist)

This is more like showing the pictures from an ultrasound. Not a new baby yet, but one in progress...still worthy of celebration. What's the estimated time until hatching?

Very exciting news, keep us posted :)

Blogger is giving me grief and I hope this comment doesn't post more than once. But here goes:

YAY! I have egg envy. And go "victim" chicken... you show them who's boss!

Okay...I can't resist...so does this finally answer the age old question of which came first: the chicken or the egg?

Seriously, Congratulations on your egg!

I do think he has my pebbly skin. LOL.

Ref: hatching

Chicks take 21 days to hatch. But these first few eggs aren't for hatching, just eating. Next year, just before spring, I'll start incubating eggs for hatching.

Joanne, Krista, Angela:

Thank you! I didn't think it was ever going to happen.

Angela: LOL! Yup. I guess that answered that question...or did it?

Ref: victim

I am so glad now I gave her extra attention and protected her from the heathen chickens.

Poor little thing. She's so sweet and gentle.

Ah, so this wasn't your first "grandchick" - this is breakfast. Hey, that's good too. Enjoy.

Congratulations! Do you have to eat her/him? I know, yes you do. Enjoy.

Dru: There's a chance the egg is not even fertilized.

Understandable, you're a proud mama. You might want to check out Publish or Perish's blog: (http://publish--or--perish.blogspot.com/2010/07/sunday-swan-watch.html)
because he's watching swan in his neighborhood prepare their nest. He's going to photograph the egg cycle and eventually show us cygnet.

Wendy: LOL.

To be truthful, this is old hat for us. We've hatched and raised emu, rhea, ducks, turkeys, and chickens for decades. But the first egg of any new flock is a proud moment.

For a while I didn't think any of them would get to laying. I can't blame them. It's been so hot. But apparently nature takes over regardless.

An egg! Best of cluck in getting more.

Yes, that was a bad yolk.

I shell stop now.
