An Author's Resolutions

In 2012, I resolve to:

• give thoughtful comments both on my blog and yours.

• comment when you have a brand new baby author on your blog because I remember when I was new too.

• think before I tweet, FB, or blog angry words. Chances are good I'm getting mad over nothing.

• remind myself that not everyone is meant for overnight success. Some of us need time to saute gently.

• talk less, listen more.

• worry less about status. Cuz really, in a hundred years, who's gonna care if my book was on the NYT list?

• pet my dogs more and growl at my husband less. (Greg will especially like this one.)

Adopting and almost losing Murray kind of brought things into perspective for me. I am insanely competitive, especially with myself, but nearly losing that little guy made me realize how fragile life is. Selling a book is ridiculously insignificant compared to family and health. If I sell, I sell, but I will no longer beat myself up to meet self-imposed deadlines and sales figures.

From now on, I intend to focus on the things that bring happiness to me and to others. When I die, I want people to remember me for who I was--a good friend who lived every day like it was her last.

Do you think your resolutions have changed over the years?

Murray's Resolution
Try to have only one near-death experience in this life. That last one was a doozy.

I imagine Christmas with little Murray would have beaten anyone over the head with a sackful of perspective. Your resolutions sound excellent.

Mine is to find the fun in writing again. Sometime in between the end of the first novel draft and now, I lost it, and I really miss it.

Rosie: I think the joy of writing can be cyclical. There are days when I say I will never write another word. I'm willing to bet one day, without any warning, it'll come back to you.

Happy New Year, Rosie!

Wonderful resolutions Maria! It's amazing how our loved ones can hit us over the head with perspective :)

Glad Murray is doing better.

Wishing you all the best Maria! I feel blessed to call you friend (I'll have to take your word on the living each day like it's your last *wink*).

Raelyn: Murray had a little respiratory relapse the other day, but I think he's better now.

I hope 2012 is good to you, Raelyn. No one's worked harder for it.

I'm so glad Murray is okay. I love his resolution and all of yours. I hope 2012 treats you and Murray (and Greg) well.

My 2012? I want to procrastinate less and learn to believe in myself more. We'll see how that goes.

Happy 2012!

Great resolutions. I think I'm a saute kind of writer, too.

And yea for you and Murray! He's such a cutie :) You two will always share a special bond.

Happy New Year!

I'm so glad to hear that Murray is doing better. He is BEAUTIFUL! I love that picture. What breed(s) is he?

I hope 2012 is a good one. I totally agree with the comment you left on my blog about less drama. Oh yes, 2011 was nothing but drama all year long. I'm so ready for a calmer, happier year for us all.

KT: We're always the last ones to believe in ourselves--even when everyone else believes in us.

Carol: Sautes always have the best flavor. :)

Angelina: I don't know what breed he is. Even the vet couldn't guess. Time will tell. Not that it matters to me. He'll be loved no matter what.
So glad Murray's okay. And what a nice bunch of resolutions.

I wish I could resolve to write more, but it's doomed to failure. Same with the annual weight-loss resolution.

Oh, well, I'll think of something. Happy New Year, Maria!

Dee: I hear ya. I remind myself that each will happen in its own time. Happy New Year!

I'm so glad Murray is okay! And I love your resolutions. Truly, who will care if one of my books makes it to the NYT lists in 100 years!
You really said it very well. I've made a similar decision about writing. We only have so much time on this world and I want to spend it well. Happy New Year.

Little Murray looks so cute. I was thinking about him yesterday while hubby & I were walking Bella, wondering how he was. I'm so glad he's doing well.

It's funny, because I've been reading about happiness recently. I'm reading The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. This is about her year long project to embrace happiness. I've actually signed up for her happiness project for 2012 and hope to blog my progress. If you're interested her website is http://www.happiness-project.com

I definitely stress about small things at times that really don't matter. Your resolutions are perfect.

I love your resolutions and I'm so glad that Murray is okay. I hope to see (hear about) the little fellow for a long, long time.

How are Tank and Iko doing?

Happy New Year!

I was also affected by Murry. Reading your posts on him made me cry and I never know how to put my feelings into words in situations like that. I'm so glad he's doing better. Give him a hug and kiss from us. :)

Have resolutions changed? Maybe. I see them now as a list of things that I'll break in the coming year. :P

Maria that tyke in the box is worth every bit of stress, heartache and tears!
Hope you do stop beating yourself up, life is so full of memories with our loved ones both furry and human that it is too short to dwell on feeling let down when things do not go as planned. Losing pretty much every "thing" made me realize without any doubts my family and my pets are what matter to me most and without them everything else is a hollow victory.

Keep making resolutions, I have none because learned early on they never get acted by me.

Stacy: Alas, he's come down with a little infection. I don't think it's life threatening, but we'll be going back to the vet on Monday.

Clarissa: The public is so fickle. They don't seem to care from year to year who's on there.

Susan: Life is way too short and I really want to make it count.

Shelley: There are some people who can't be happy no matter what, but I'm a firm believer that you can make your own happiness.

Miki: Happy New Year!

Dru: Tank and Iko are with their dad and having the time of their lives. They sleep all day and get a liberal cookie allowance. :)

Drake: Ref: I see them now as a list of things that I'll break in the coming year.

That's a goal in itself, isn't it? LOL. Happy New Year.

Jackie: After the horrible natural disaster you went through, I know you understand the meaning of what's important. Sometimes it takes something drastic to make an impression.

Great resolutions. A couple I can really relate to!

I hope you have a Happy New Year. Please give Murray a love from all the two and four footed McClones!

Like Jackie (hi, Jackie!) I don't intend to make any New Year resolutions, but I do like yours, Maria. So glad Murray is holding his own.

Happy New Year, everyone!

I'm praying for him, too!!! What a sweet little guy!

As for your last question, I think resolutions have changed over the years by the person. I treat them differently each year because I'm slightly (or more) different on this Jan. 1 than the last or next.

I hope 2012 starts, middles and ends wonderfully for you guys.

What a great list. I think I'll have to steal them all. :)

Happy New Year to you and yours, Maria. And a special happy new year to the cute Murray. So glad he's doing well.
Maria Zannini said…
Melissa; Will do. The little guy is sick again. We're going back to the vet tomorrow.

Jenny: They're not so much resolution as they are guidelines. :)

Jennifer: Good observation. Part is due to how we changed, but also how people around us have changed.

Shirley: Happy New Year, Shirley. And continued success! You're on a roll.

I'm so glad Murray is doing better. He's got a great resolution. Yours are commendable too, though I'm still tickled as a fiddle about your resolution to growl at your honey buns less. I must agree he'd like that one.

@Angela

@Sarah

I think Murray will be very glad to be a regular puppy without being poked or prodded.

It's been a pretty rough life for someone who's only been in this world a few weeks. I have faith though. And I appreciate everyone's continued support and emails. You guys make my low days bearable.
