State of the Home-in-stead

The kitchen is done, and I have my sink back! Much rejoicing was done by all.

There are three other utility sinks in the house. One in the laundry room, my office, and in the garage. But was I happy? Nooooo. I really missed my kitchen sink. And what a sink it is. It's one of those granite composite beauties with two extra deep basins.

Even the faucet took days to find. It's a nickel plated faucet with a good heavy feel to it. I could've kept my old faucet because there was nothing wrong with it, but I wanted to splurge on the nickel.

My only regret is that I can't justify the funds to get the floors refinished. I spent that money on a *$#!% computer! My computer woes are lingering, but not as bad as before.

At least I can feast my eyes on this. Click on the picture for a better look.

The granite is so shiny, you can see the whole faucet reflected in it.

Dog for Sale: Iko did it to me AGAIN! He knocked down my seedling trays, smearing dirt all over my Oriental rug. My little plants are history.

I wonder if that dog works for Monsanto. He could be on a one-dog mission to derail my heirloom garden.

Instead of replanting the trays, I pulled out every pot I owned and started new seeds in them. This time I put them outside.

Maybe I ought to rent out Iko during seed-starting season. Anyone need a good watchdog? He can sniff out scorpions, snakes and coyotes. Oh, wait. Never mind. Now I remember why I keep him. He found our first scorpion of the year last week.

Guess I'll forgive him. Besides. He said he was sorry.

He looks pretty sorry to me.
How's the weather by you guys? Anyone else have a plant-killing dog?

Stunning looking kitchen, Maria. And Iko? Dont be fooled by that expression. He's putting it on. Trust me. I'm a teacher : )

Mike: LOL. I will bow to your expertise. But he offered me his paw too. Did your students ever do that?

Iko is so cute! How can you stay mad at a face like that one?

I love the new kitchen. I wish I could have something similar now. :-) I like how the glasses are hanging upside down kinda like in a bar.

The weather is very nice here and I don't have a plant killing dog yet, but the peonies aren't blooming yet either. My mom's dog eats them every time they come out. she actually puts some construction fencing around it so her dog doesn't get to them. He still tries and sometimes we still gets a bloom or two.

Cant wait to see the kitchen... Beautiful!!! You deserve it.
Now... How many cookies did you give to Iko to get this picture... Its going straight into the doggie dictionary, under "I am so sorry mom, for messing w your plants" . Priceless shot. I think he needs a new toy. :o) tia mel

Angelina: Other than a stump that he whittled down to nothing, Iko has never attempted to dig or destroy my outside plants. It's just the seedlings he likes. I think that dog plays me like a fiddle. :)

***

Mel: No cookies were given during the shooting of this scene. All I did was hold up one of my empty seedling cups and that's what I got.

PS Can't wait to see you guys again. It's been too long.

Maria,

My heart goes out to you for having to slum it in a kitchen like that. But stay brave, help is on the way to break you out of your prison! ;)

Iko, well, I'm on his side. I blame the person who left the seedlings in a place where they were liable to be knocked over :P - maybe he has a yearning to start gardening himself? A dog has to start somewhere.

We're lucky with our two cats and two dogs, though technically we only own one dog. The second is a guide dog in training who we are fostering until her training is complete, which will be in 5 weeks - that's going to be a hard 'goodbye' I'm not looking forward to.
Maria Zannini said…
Oh, Mark. I don't know that I could foster a dog and then let him go. You are far braver than I am. I would love to read about your fostering. Do you ever discuss it on your blog?

I have an actual atrium inside the house. Short of putting barricades and orange cones, I have no way of keeping him out. Oddly enough, he only destroys the little seedlings. He leaves the bigger plants alone.

Iko does look humble in a "I did it to make a mess so you can use your nice new kitchen sink to clean up" look. Beautiful granite. Enjoy many hours of basking in its reflective shine.

Maria,

Well, unless Ceri (that's her name, she's an 18 month old Golden Retriever with a gorgeous face and beautiful brown eyes. She is the only dog I've known to chase head tail going counter-clockwise, as in, bum first!) starts getting involved in role playing gaming, I don't think she will appear on the blog feed. But I think I might do a farewell piece on her in about 5 weeks time, photos included. So might be worth checking on my blog around then ;)

*Typo correction - "to chase HER tail going counter-clockwise" - my apologies for that* ;)

Poor dog. That's a guilty look if ever I saw one.

And what a gorgeous kitchen! That granite is so shiny.

Oh, your dog does look so sorry! Although, my dog has the same look when I'm mad at her too. I hope your planting goes well.

Love your kitchen. It's gorgeous!

Poor Iko...He does look sad.

Your kitchen is fabulous Maria!! I'm in total kitchen envy right now. Oh the baking and cooking and puttering around I could do...
Maria Zannini said…
Michelle: Mischievous as he is, I can't stay mad at him. He's just too sweet. I guess seedlings are better than my leather furniture. I'm glad he outgrew THAT fetish.

Mark: I'll definitely check it out.

Maybe she's left-pawed. :) I tend to move counterclockwise too.
Maria Zannini said…
LG: I never realized it was so reflective until I saw the pictures.

Raelyn: I'm hoping it will improve my baking aptitude--but I'm not holding my breath. LOL.

Beautiful kitchen, Maria!

That sweet dog? He's sorry for sure-- until next time!

That picture of Iko should be submitted somewhere to show "Most apologetic look EVER" by a dog most people fear. He does look like he's literally whimpering and saying "Sorry mommy. Please forgive me. I won't do it again (until next year)."

As for your kitchen. Well, now. I'm loving the granite but my eyes swiveled straight to that wine rack lol!!!
Maria Zannini said…
Kaye: I am a sucker for a sad dog face. Gets me every time.

Krista: I think it turned out well, despite all the delays and snafus.

Angela: Believe it or not that wine rack is going away. I had picked out a wine cooler that would've fit perfectly in that spot, but when I went to buy it, the store raised the price another 50 bucks. I need to do some comparison shopping. I'm sure I can find it cheaper.

Clarissa: Just saw your comment. It was stuck in the spam folder. Go figure.

I think our dogs play us. They know where we're vulnerable. Da bums. :P

Poor Iko.

I love your kitchen!

The weather is nice..in the 70s.
Maria Zannini said…
Dru: That's beautiful weather for New York! Isn't that above average for this time of year? I'll bet you're loving it.

We haven't seen Sophie's vegetarian side yet. You already know about her other side.

And I'm sure Mike is wrong about Iko's sincerity. Honestly, look at that face.

The kitchen is BEAUTIFUL!

Iko does look extremely sorry. I have a naughty boy, my Zutchka, as well. ha!

Your kitchen is beautiful! I have the same colors in mine - sans the granite, which I would love to have installed. All that counter space...I'm drooling. ;)
Maria Zannini said…
Linda: Iko got to you, didn't he? :) He's always sorry when he's done something wrong, but there is something tragically wrong with his memory because he doesn't retain those lessons.

Nadja: What a cool name for your dog. What does it mean?

Ref: counter space
That was really important to me when we bought this house. It is a delight to prepare food there.
Love your new sink. I had a rottie years ago who would go sit in the corner when he got in trouble. He would hang his head and peek over his shoulder. It was so hard to stay mad at him.
Stacy McKitrick said…
Beautiful kitchen. I honestly don't see anything wrong with your floor, either!

I had a plant-eating cat once (he loved the little spiders on my spider plant!), and a birthday-cake-eating dog (dumb me left it on the counter thinking she couldn't reach it), but no plant-eating dog.

We're having beautiful Southern California weather here in Ohio. I'll cry when it leaves!

Maria,

Sorry to tell you this, but I've nominated you for a 'Versatile Blogger Award' - you will find the details on my site :)

The kitchen looks great, Maria! I want one like that, too, but can't seem to get over the whole destroying of the tiles and the going without a kitchen part. One day!
Iko does look sorry. I think you'd better keep him.

Maria,

Your kitchen looks gorgeous. I have serious kitchen envy. That granite - very nice!
I already have a plant destroying dog. I don't need yours too! :)
The kitchen is gorgeous!! And Iko looks very apologetic. I bet you can't stay mad at him.

Beautiful kitchen! Makes all the crap getting it to that point, worthwhile. I hope you cook many a wonderful meals within it's fresh interior.

Poor Iko, he really does look sorry.

Your kitchen it beautiful. Truly beautiful!

Iko is really, really sorry from the bottom of his heart. I know these things. :)
Marian Perera said…
Lovely kitchen. I want one of those some day!

And maybe a cat, though I can't imagine any cat looking as downcast as poor Iko does in that picture, not even after eating plants or sharpening their claws on the sofa.
I love that kitchen and that dog. He's soooo sorry! You have to forgive him.

the kitchen is beautiful!!
And Iko looks so cute! I hope you gave him a kiss, even if he was naughty. Tula likes to drag our houseplants around outside if she's really bored. And an cuke that grows through the fence belongs to her. Not to eat, just to carry around.

What a truly gorgeous kitchen Maria, and yes you must give poor Iko another chance as he is a good boy to have around for the scorpions!

My husband's garden survived the 4+ inches of rain and high winds from the severe storms in early am, we have been cutting leaf lettuce for past month and should have some nice turnips soon. Our onions, potatoes and other plants look lush and hopefully the coming days of sun will not blister the poor tomato plants to badly.

Hope you get your computer sorted soon, I have not had time to do blog posts yet but have photos can send you but some of them are high resolution so not sure if they will load.

Susan: Mine have never been that sorry. LOL!

Stacy: The floor is a bit worn on the high traffic paths. It’s solid wood though so it should be easy to refinish—just not cheap.

Mark: I thought you liked me, Mark! LOL. I’ll stop by as soon as I can.

Jimmy: It was a great deal of trouble, but all’s well that ends well.

Jenny: Tank doesn’t mind. The worse Iko is, the better he looks. :)

Shelley: And yours is still a puppy too. My sympathies.

Kathy: Sorry it took me so long to welcome you, Kathy. I live in the boonies and my internet runs on a broke-leg rabbit. ;)

Darke: If it weren’t for Iko, I might never have any excitement in my life. :P
Maria Zannini said…
Shirley: I know he’s sorry. I just wish he had a better retention level.

Marian: I think Iko is lobbying for an Academy award. No matter what he does, I always end up forgiving him.

Barbara: You guys are going to give him a swelled head. LOL.

Anon: I wish I knew what all that meant.

Sarah: I am knocking on wood that he never gets it in his head to go for the garden. I hate to barricade my atrium, but I guess I can do that and just take it down when company comes by.

Jackie: We had some rain, didn’t we? I thought it was just the deep cloud cover that cut off my internet, but no, our provider called me and said their equipment was damaged. That excuse is getting really old.
