Bloggy Contest Coming Soon

If I ever decide to stop blogging, you can thank the spammers for me quitting. I am sick to death of seeing their slimy links on my blog.

My posts are moderated after they've gone live for 24 hours so I suspect you shouldn't see most of the spam that comes through, but I still see it in my email and it drives me absolutely insane.

It's gotten so bad, I have actually considered deleting this blog. So far I have talked myself out of it.

***
Mistress of the Stone should be out soon. Word on the street says August 28th.

I am planning a little contest for my OTHER blog, Back to Basics. It's going to run a whole month. No ETA on when it'll start, but expect it very soon. In the meanwhile, if you're not following my blog or Facebook page, you should.

When the contest starts, those who are already following Back to Basics or have Liked its sister-Facebook page (The Frugal Way) will get extra points in the drawing. Comments and tweets will count too.

Last week I talked about picnics and going green. Before that it was laundry, and toilets, and building a pet first aid kit. I run the gamut with topics when it comes to frugal living and simple solutions. Next week, I'm even having my first guest.

Everyone is welcome--except spammers.

Has anyone noticed an increase in spam? Do you moderate your blogs?

Not so much spam for me on this blog, but my Wordpress one, oh yeah. I love the program on Wordpress. Doesn't post the spam and you can delete it at your leisure.

I don't see much spamming on my blog. I don't post enough on my blog so I've fallen off the radar, but I'm planning on blogging more.

What about if you have those catchits (or whatever they are calls) back on your blog. Maybe that will deter spammers.

I only get the occassional spam. Guess I'm not so popular. Or I just don't hit those "key" words spammers are looking for - whatever they are.

Darke: On Blogger, when it's moderated, it shouldn't show up on anyone's email notification but mine. My only recourse is to disable email notification too and I don't want to miss anyone else's real comment.

***
Angelina: Word verification is such a chore for commenters. I know I don't like it when I have to use it on other blogs. Though coincidentally, since I disable Capcha, spam has increased. Spammers have got me by the cohones.

***
Stacy: Keywords are a double-edged sword. Good keywords puts you higher in the search engine standings, but it also makes you more visible to spammers.

I've not really suffered very much from spam but then I'm perhaps not as widely known yet?

Pat: For years, I was spam-free. Guess it's my turn to deal with the vermin.

I'm not on Blogger any more but it seemed to me the spam was caught pretty well in the spam filter thingy. I remember having to check the spam filter and don't remember getting a ton of email for that even with the notification on. Of course, that blog was way down the list in visibility.

Now Wordpress does give me a 'please moderate' email when someone posts for the first time but most goes into spam without my getting an email. Of course, I'm not as visible as you either :)

The drawbacks of fame!

:rubs hands together and circles August 28th on the calendar:

I added Back to Basics to my sidebar...does that count? LOL. I've been enjoying the blog and I'm looking forward to your first guest.

Have a great one my friend!

Raelyn, you're brilliant! Instead of blog following, being put on a blog roll is far more beneficial. (Well, beneficial as long as you're not buried among a lot of others.) Thank you!

I've only had trouble with spammers since removing Capcha. I have no idea why. They still can't get in, but they keep trying.

Thank you again for the great suggestion.

I had a lot of that some time ago. So much in fact that Blogger flagged my blog and shut it down for a day or two back in March. Apparently it or someone I follow got hacked. Blogger did some kind of clean up I guess and put it back up. Since then I haven't had much at all.

Maria Zannini said...

KarenG: I live in fear that my blog might be flagged by Blogger. I've seen that occur to numerous people because of spammers infiltrating their system. It's appalling.

I am sooooo excited for Mistress of the Stone!!!

Okay, fangirl moment over now :-)

Spammers are infrequent with my blog, thankfully. Sometimes, the spam block seems a bit zealous and I have to go retrieve a comment that shouldn't have been marked as spam lol!!!

i had a bit of spam today. I have a friend who had to turn on word verification because of the amount of spam he gets.

Yes, I've noticed a lot of spam too recently. :(

Wanted to say, thanks to your other blog, I got the stains out of my toilet! Yay!

I get spam on my reading blog but luckily wordpress catches it before it posts.

I'm just happy that people visit! *laughs* Not really. Thankfully, if there's been a problem, I haven't noticed. Thanks for visiting mine today, by the way. I love your visits. Have a great week.

Spammers are beyond annoying. Lots of sympathy.

Maria Zannini said...

Angela: It took me a few tries to figure out some of my friends were being sent to the penalty box--yet it allows any yahoo selling a whatsit.

Sarah: I really don't want to go back to Capcha. Commenting shouldn't be a chore. Spammers are bums.

***
Jennifer: Oh, I'm so glad to hear the pumice worked for you. I LOVE that thing.

Maria Zannini said...

Dru: I like Wordpress's way of monitoring spammer better than Bloggers. Just let me decide who is okay and be done with it.

***
Jimmy: I suppose I should look at the bright side. At least people visit. LOL.

***
Jenny: I don't wish ill on anyone, but I'm willing to make an exception for spammers.

Spam drives me nuts. During the last week I've had dozens of messages, after weeks with having none. The good thing about Wordpress is the Spam plugin I use. (Askmet). It catches all the spam and I delete at leisure. With Wordpress you can also ban specific isp numbers so a particular person can't comment.

Good luck with your contest.

Maria Zannini said...

Shelley: These spam blitzes seem to come in waves. I just can't imagine it would be profitable to them. As savvy as most of us are about the net, who would click on their links?

Southpaw said...

I have spam filters on my blog that catches 99.9% of all spam. I have an area that holds all the spam so I can look through it to see it something was marked incorrectly.

I have noticed that there are time when it just fills up and other times it minimal.

Maria Zannini said...

Holly: The spam filters seem to catch the majority of spam. I guess I notice it more because gmail notifies me each and every time.

Cate Masters said...

Since removing the word verification, I'm hit with tons of spam too. Though the filter catches it, it does clog up my email.
Congrats on the release date! Very exciting.

Maria Zannini said...

Cate: I'm glad you said that. I thought it was just me who seemed to notice more spam since removing Capcha.

I don't have captcha - and I get few if any spam comments - maybe three over five years...Have I been blogging that long?

I do get an awful lot of email spam though. Is there any connection?

And, Maria, you'll always be blogging - in hopefully the far future through the ouiji board. (I wonder if that ever gets spam?)

Hi Maria!! I don't have problems with spammers, but then, my ill-health this year has made me remiss in Blogging regularly and I don't think I'm high on visibility lists, either.

It's a shame but I still think you should put the Catchpa back. It might be a little annoying for commenters (though I'm so used to it I don't mind) but it's better for us to type in a few letters than have you quit Blogging!!!!
