Billy, the Bully

I'll probably put up a State of the Homestead next week. I'm hoping I might have some interesting video by then. At least it should be more interesting than my thighs which are currently punctuated with bruises thanks to Billy (the goat).

By the way, I renamed him Barbecue after our last run-in. I walked with a limp all week. He left me with a humongous bruise that hurts even now.

He's not mean or aggressive--unless you're walking in with food. In his ever-present greed, he'll ram or gore anyone who gets between him and that bucket of feed. It's a constant test of wills when I walk in there. I separate him from the does when I feed him now so at least they can eat in peace.

I should've known he'd start that business. His father did the same thing with his herd. If he keeps it up, he's going in the pot.

This week I hope we make it to the state fair. I say that every year but something always comes up. I'm crossing my fingers. Greg only goes for the food. But I like to look at the farm animals and the handicrafts. This year they're having ostrich races, but it's only in the evenings and I'm not sure we'll be there that late.

In unrelated news, I just finished watching season 2 of Call the Midwife, a Brit drama about London's east side during the 1950s . Thanks to Sarah Ahiers for turning me on to that show. Gets me bawling every time. I highly recommend it.

Have you ever gone to a big fair? What's your favorite part?

This Thursday is a special day for me. Stop by and see me then.

Wow, that's one nasty goat. Too bad there wasn't a way to communicate with him that if he doesn't smarten up, well...

I haven't been to a fair in years. I don't think they're the same up here as they are there. I don't remember any animals being present, or maybe they weren't there the day I went.

Darke: It's all that testosterone. All male animals have some attitude. I think it's what makes them male. ;-)

But this is a farm and I won't tolerate bad behavior. I still have a few tricks up my sleeve to keep him at bay, but if he gets worse, he'll have to go.

Ooh, can't wait until Thursday!

You renamed him barbeque--LOL!!! That's great.
Maria Zannini said…
Jennifer: Barbecue with buttered red potatoes. :-)

Poor barbeque. He hasn't got a clue.

I haven't been to our state fair in several decades. Used to do the county fair, them I just started volunteering as a taste tester for my buddy Grumpy who enters bake goods every year. I can't remember the last time she didn't bring home a couple of blue ribbons. *smacks lips*

Linda: The next time you come to visit me, bring Grumpy with you. Good bakers (and cooks) are always welcome in my home. :)

Sounds like you need to wear armor or kevlar just to feed Billy, er Barbeque. Or maybe carry a chair, like a lion tamer. "Back, back!"

I've never been to a state fair. Almost went to the Ohio State Fair this year, but our friend had to cancel, so we didn't go. I have been to a county fair back when the kids were little, but they really didn't like it, so we never went back.

I have some great recipes for goat stew

Oh man! I had a pet goat named Billy when I was four and he was as much of a bully as your Billy (aka Barbeque ...hilarious ;). Whenever he was on a long rope to keep him from running off (pre-fence) he'd turn in circles around me until I was tied up and crying. Still love him though lol ;). Hope your bruises heal!
Maria Zannini said…
Stacy: Even if I kept him from breaking skin, he'd still bruise me. It's only during feeding time. If I don't have any feed on me, I'm no longer interesting.
Maria Zannini said…
Mike: If you cook, I'll clean. :)
Maria Zannini said…
Rula: Oh my gosh. That would scare me to death. Bad goat. Hope you didn't get hurt.

LOL.. Barbeque.

We used to go to the county fair in Michigan when I was a kid. Even went to the county fair in CO a couple times. Once I took my daughter to the state fair. It was interesting, but once was enough. I don't do crowds.

OOH! We just finished season 2 too!
I cried on two episodes, the christmas special with the woman's buried children (ugh, the tears!)
And then all the stuff with Sister Bernadette and the Doctor (so many happy feels!)

And what a naughty goat. There has to be some sort of way to train him to be patient and polite during feeding time, but i guess i don't know if it's worth the effort if he's just going to be delicious goat bbq later.

I'm sad you have your State Fair now. Ours was finished over a month ago and i already miss the delicious fair foods
If there's anyone who can handle that goat, it's probably you.
I'm going to check out that tv show.

BE: I try to go early to avoid the big crush of people, but the fairgrounds are so massive, it can handle a lot of people. Keeping my fingers crossed for this year.

Sarah: Oh, my heart was pounding over Sister Bernadette and the doctor. I wanted the best for them. They seemed so lonely.
Maria Zannini said…
Susan: You won't regret it. I've read that it's really an accurate representation of the 1950s in the east end of London. It really broadened my perspective of how people lived and suffered in decades past.

It's on Netflix.
I lived in Dallas most of my young life and never made it to the Fair. Boo!

Good luck with the goat. I know what it's like to live with a food monster.

We just had our equivalent of your state fair, Royal Show. Animals and fairground rides and lots of fairyfloss (cotton candy). I didn't go, but did hear the fireworks ... much to my dog's confusion "Is it thunder, Mum? should I hide?"

Billy sounds like a goat with a one track mind when the scent of food hits his nostrils.

As for the state fair, I mainly want to go for the smoked turkey leg and funnel cakes. Yeah, I know, for the food, like Greg lol!
Maria Zannini said…
Barbara: You never went?! Every kid should go at least once. I heard they let kids off from school now so they can go.
Maria Zannini said…
Jenny: Aw, poor baby. I hate fireworks now. I hate to see what it does to my boys.
Maria Zannini said…
Angela: Come to think of it, I don't have a favorite fair food, but I often sneak a bite from Greg's turkey leg. :)
Cate Masters said…
Aw, he looks so peaceful when he's eating. You might have to get some goalie pads to protect your legs!
Ostrich races sound like a lot of fun. (Funny, we have goat races here in Pennsylvania)
We love to take the grands to local fairs, and to the Pennsylvania Farm Show in January. Best milkshakes anywhere. :)

Yes, Barbeque sounds like an appropriate name for the stinker. Roast would work, or a simple Dinner. Bratty goat. Does he not comprehend one must not bite, butt, or otherwise hurt the hand, leg, body of the person who feeds him?

Brit TV, must check that series out. I'm all about my BBCA :D
Maria Zannini said…
Cate: I can't remember the last time I had a real old fashioned milk shake. mmm

Re: goat races
I race with my goats all the time. LOL
Maria Zannini said…
Raelyn: He's just being a boy. The males are notorious for bad behavior.

I didn't want to keep a buck on my farm, but Greg vetoed me. :(
