A Productive Weekend All Around

On the home front, we prepared for another cold snap. I wish Canada wasn't quite so generous with their winter weather. I'm not complaining. They have it far worse, but it's a lot of work for me to drain the water lines and water all the animals by bucket. At least Greg was here to help me before he left.

Over the weekend, we made a little pocket money too. I put a Craigslist ad for the Marans chickens and sold almost all of them. We still have 5 roosters left, so they'll be going in the pot. And at the last minute I decided to keep two of the hens.

We had a lot of calls and the hens went fast! I think posting a picture of the dark brown eggs that a couple of them are already laying did the trick.

I don't run Craigslist ads unless Greg is home just to be on the safe side. You never know what to expect. But mostly we ran into people like us, retired and doing a little homesteading on the side. It was nice to talk shop and compare notes.

We got a lot of clean up and repairs done on the property so it was a pretty productive weekend.

I think most people in the US were watching the Superbowl, but I'm not a sports fan, so I don't have a clue what went on Sunday. The only thing I look forward to are the commercials. Budweiser almost always hits its mark, but this year Kia and Jaguar produced some spectacular commercials too.

How was your weekend? Did you do anything interesting?

Craiglist scares me, too. When we listed my car on there, we made sure not to post our address or phone number. Then we made sure to meet at a neutral site. It all turned out well, sold the car in record time, but didn't make me trust the site any better. Glad it worked out for you, too.

As for my weekend, spent it with friends and family. Don't get to do that too often.

The hens look so pretty. There's a family at the end of our road who have chickens. They don't coop them up and they wander close to the road. As far as I know, none have been hit.

Our weekend was spent recovering from last weekend. Between the fraud claim (which was cleared up), the car breaking down and the sump pump breaking down, I thought my husband was going to have a heart attack. Ugh. Remind me why having a house is a good thing?

Glad you were able to have a very productive weekends. Being able to have those can be pretty nice.

This weekend was pretty decent. Nothing overly productive, more spending and out-going funds because of the time of the month but that's productive. Keeping a roof over our heads and the heat going this time of year takes on a whole new meaning.

Stacy: I know! After they caught that Craigslist murderer, I always take precautions. If my body is ever found, know that I didn't go without a fight. :)

Darke: Holy moley! That would give me a coronary too. I hate when everything happens at once too.

I hope all your problems are behind you now. You filled your quota for a year.

Angela: I try to stay frugal with the heat, but darn it, I was cold this weekend and decided to splurge. LOL!

End of the month and the beginning of the year is always the most expensive for us.

PS Hope Chipmunk had a good time this weekend!

Love your hens! We had a day of early spring weather and now we're back to snow and sleet.
Actually caught up on some book reviews this weekend. I'm diving into my next book today since the snow has us locked inside again.

i honestly spent this weekend playing video games. It was a nice break from being busy busy busy.

Rula: This weather is insane. One day we're in the 70s, the next day it's in the 30s.

I'm getting weather-sick.
Maria Zannini said…
Susan: Getting snow-bound isn't such a bad life as long as there is power and plenty of hot chocolate.

Enjoy!
Maria Zannini said…
Sarah: Ha! You deserve a little down time with everything that's happened in your life.

Enjoy it while you can.

This weekend consisted of me living underneath a pile of blankets in between switching out loads of laundry, whee!

I drank a lot of tea, too. Tea is wonderful in this weather, and I made an effort to drink extra water because I was drinking so much tea, haha.

It's downright frigid up here in Oklahoma today. I'm so ready for spring.

Rebekah: In another month, we'll be warm all the time.

My only condolence is that at least the colder weather is keeping the scorpions in hibernation.

Always a silver lining.
We have a local ad offering run by a TV/radio station KSL. So when we need to buy or sell anything we go to ksl.com. It's how we got rid of things recently when we emptied our house and moved. It's a little less scary since it's local.

I never watch the super bowl. But the grocery store sales on soda and snacks and meat are always welcome!

I don't know about Canadian snow, but we've been having the most spectacular rain, tidal surges and extensive flooding. If you check the pictures, Somerset is like a giant inland sea. Apparently it's the biggest rainfall in one month since Daniel Boone explored Kentucky - whatever date that was. Monmouth is just wet. My weekend was delightfully unproductive. Two crits and comfort reading - an old Agatha Christie :)

Craigslist scares me too. My friend has used it a few times and brought her hubby and met the person at a neutral spot. All good though.
I have to look up those commercials on youtube!
Maria Zannini said…
Karen: Wish we had that. We live in such a tiny community that we're kind of forced to use Craigslist. I've never had anything but good luck, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't be careful.

Mike: I saw the pictures from another friend in the UK. Time to start building that ark! Holy cow! That's a lot of water.

Hope you stay high and dry.

Jennifer: The commercials weren't bad at all this year. A couple were a little loftier than thou, but the best were good solid, lump-in-your-throat stories.

Not a sports fan, though I usually watch the Superbowl with hubby. Even I was disappointed! I missed a lot of commercials somehow but am catching up.
Glad you're careful when posting to Craig's list. Too many people out there using that for the wrong reasons.

Wow, those are gorgeous eggs! My brother has a farm, but his chickens are getting old and don't lay as many eggs as they used to.

It's cold here in NH, too. Brrrr.
Maria Zannini said…
Cate: All I've been hearing is how underwhelming the game was. But at least we still had the commercials.
Maria Zannini said…
Hi Aubrie and welcome!

Once chickens get into their third and fourth year, production starts to slow down. That's when it's time to put them in the pot.

Marans produce some of the darkest brown eggs of all the brown egg layers. They're always conversation-starters.

Thanks for popping in!

I'm sure your egg photo did the trick. You just know they're going to taste good.

We caught up on chores around the house and the usual stuff. We've had some great weather and have no complaints on that score.
FastBusa said…
I wish I could spend the weekend playing video games!
Maria Zannini said…
Shelley: I couldn't tell them which two hens had started laying early, but I guess it's like gambling. You buy, thinking you'll get lucky and get the early layers.
Maria Zannini said…
FastBusa: Sadly, you are married to a mean wife.

Poor Greg.

Well, Sunday revolved around the Super Bowl in our house. With that many males, how could it not, LOL.

However, Saturday was quite productive with some purge and pack on my part.

Of course, you have me completely beat! Glad Greg was around to help.

Raelyn: It was such a pretty weekend, we had to take advantage of it before Mother Nature lowered the boom.

Nice that Craigslist worked out so well for you on this.

Last weekend...um...I think we...no, that was the week before. Wait here. I have to go ask Stan. (darn short term memory...)

Linda: I used to get upset with myself when I used to forget stuff. Now I just shrug and move on. Whatever it was will come back at a more inconvenient moment.
