This, That and the Bed

I'll be out of pocket for a few days while I visit with friends and family this week. Today we're headed for the State Fair of Texas

In years past, something has always happened to stop me from going, but this time the weather is great, no one is sick, and we have company so we'll be playing tour guides.

This Friday is also a special day. Greg and I will celebrate our 39th wedding anniversary. We usually go out some place special but I'd be glad to make a gourmet meal if that's what he wants. As long as we're together, it doesn't matter.

Da bed: A few weeks ago I mentioned that my sleep has suffered for years and that it was time to find a new bed. I've waffled on the decision for years because I was afraid to commit (and invest) on such an expensive item.

After another miserable night of sleep I finally gave in and did some reconnaissance shopping, trying out several beds and talking with the sales people. The chain stores were big on the heavy sales pitch. Although most of the beds were 'nice', they weren't all that different from what I'd been using.

I checked out the TempurPedic mattresses but their 'cooling technology' was a little misleading. When I did further research I found that the foam cooled off but only if you weren't lying on it. What good is that while you're trying to sleep on a hot mattress?

Finally, I went to a mom and pop (non-chain) mattress store and they showed me a hybrid bed that used coiled foam. From the get-go it was incredibly more comfortable than the other beds I tried.

It was also very expensive.

Another few nights on my existing bed and I finally caved and took the plunge.

It's been almost two weeks and I can say without exaggeration that it's the best sleep I've had in my life. Even though I have existing painful pressure points on both sides of my hips, I have not felt them at all on this bed.

I used to get up exceptionally early, getting only four or five hours of sleep because staying in bed any longer became too painful. Now I sleep a full seven hours and have not had a single backache. Not one.

It's still a big investment, but I am sleeping so much better that I hate to get out of bed.

The brand name is called Woude and it's made by the WorldBed Studio out of California. Their web site is awful. It gives you hardly any useful information, but you'll want to go to the showroom anyway and check it out for yourself.

Update: I don't believe it. It's thundering and lightning outside. Oy! Maybe it'll be short-lived. Wish us luck.

So, what's going on for you this week?

Sounds like a great investment, Maria. Sleep is the greatest thing.

Congrats on the 39th wedding anniversary, and here's hoping the weather cooperates. Also glad that you managed to get a good night's sleep. :)

Weighing the cost for the mattress against the residual comfort of a good night's rest is a no brainer so I'm glad you took the plunge. A good night's rest is helpful to the mind, body and the soul.

I hope things work out for lots of outdoor fun and activity for you guys. And an early Happy Anniversary to you and hubby! Big Hugs to you both!!!

Yay for a good night's sleep! I'll have to look into those beds when we get fed up with this one. And Happy Anniversary! 39 years is awesome! Congratulations!

Have fun at the fair today. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the weather clears up and you have a lovely day. =o)

Mike: I'm such a Doubting Thomasina that at first I thought it was just coincidence. But after week 2 I'm convinced it was the bed giving me many of my pain issues.

Marian: I still find it hard to believe we've been together this long. We don't seem any older--but we do look it. :)

Angela: Oh, but it was sooo expensive. The thing that finally convinced me was their no exceptions guarantee. If I don't like it for any reason up to 15 years, I can take it back.

BE: The radar shows the storms moving away from Dallas so we should be safe in an hour or so. My guests have really been looking forward to the fair so I hate to disappoint them.

Bummer about the Tempurpedic, but your new bed sounds awesome!

One day i'm going to have to make a change as well

Michelle: My pocketbook will still hurt though. :)It's the most I've ever spent on a bed.

Much as I hated to spend the money, I can't deny I'm much more rested.

Sarah: I tried the TempurPedic side by side with the Woude. The Woude is temperature neutral. I never got warm even after lying on it all night. But the Tempurpedic stayed warm. I might tolerate it but I knew hubby would hate it. He hates sleeping too warm.

Happy 39th! When you're with the right person, time just flies, doesn't it?

Re your bed: My husband balked at the price we paid for our bed, but admitted last night that it was money well spent. And I agree. After nearly a week in a hotel room for Dragon*Con, I'd forgotten how sore my hips could be in the morning. I don't have that problem with our new bed. Sometimes you just have to ignore the price for comfort, huh?

Stacy: Nobody can explain to you the concept of time flying until you've experienced it.

Seems like yesterday.
Happy Anniversary, Maria and Greg! And a new bed sounds like the perfect gift.
Happy Anniversary.

As we say in our family...That's a lot of many.
I'm still trying to get a move completed. Congrats on your bed! Nothing beats a good night's sleep. I hope you never regret your purchase.
And congrats on the anniversary! Also worth the investment. ;)

Karen: I never thought of it before but it is a great gift to give to ourselves.

Barbara: Yup. Marriage and beds are both commitments and huge investments. Apparently I was better at picking spouses than beds.

Jenny: It was a very long day. My only regret is that they didn't have the Clydesdale horses this year. They are amazing.
I read about the new bed with interest. My husband and I are looking. We both want different things in a bed though. Glad to hear it's working for you.

Susan: Every couple I know tells me the same thing. We are such opposites when it come to partners.

Greg and I both like different types of mattresses too, but so far it's working for him too. The only other option was separate beds and we're not ready for that yet. :)

I'm such a clutz (is that a word?) I forgot to wish you a very happy anniversary. All the best to you both!

Happy anniversary! 39 years - What an awesome accomplishment.

Good job on the bed. It's one place where it's important to go with what works, even if it' expensive. Hope you continue to sleep well!

Mike: Thanks, Mike. :)

Marlene: We just got the bill. It hurts a little bit now--at least in the pocketbook. LOL.

Hope you are having a wonderful time at the fair. Looks like fun. :)

As for the mattress, we recently purchased one, but I still get sore shoulders from laying too long. I doubt they'd sell the same brand mattress over here. Oh well, at least it supports my back to some extent.

As for my week, I've been writing as much as I can. :)
