The Garage Sale Countdown

Prince Albert (the goatling) is doing fine. Unfortunately, his cousins still haven't been born yet. He wanders around, doing meet and greets with the adult goats, but you just know he wants to run and play with kids his own size.

We've had some beastly weather the last few days so I'm glad the other does didn't deliver during those squalls. Soon, I hope.

The sorting continues for our upcoming garage sale. I'll have pictures Monday.

The neighborhood is having a group sale the following weekend. Considering how much stuff I have, I'll probably throw in with them as well. It'll all depend on the weather. I know at least this weekend will be dry.

We have furniture: beds, tables (different sizes), sideboards (yes, more than one), lamps, mirrors. Most of these things are antiques which makes them more solid than the new stuff you see today.

I have enough decor that I can group them by civilization. So far, I've found Oriental, Aztec, English, and Egyptian. We've got paintings, prints, sculpture, and ceramics.

Housewares: Holy moly! How did we end up with so many pieces of housewares? I think as we kept buying higher end stuff, the older stuff got stored and they had babies. Isn't that what happens in dark boxes?

Clothes: All of them Greg's. I've found three boxes of his jeans. I can guarantee you they're all in mint condition. Some still have tags.

Art equipment: If clothes are Greg's impulse buys, art supplies are mine. I have at least three easels, one custom-made and heavy. There are also a few crafty things that I'm sure will go quickly.

Tools and yard machines: Lawnmowers, chainsaws, etcetera, etcetera.

Bedding: I've downsized so that I only keep one set of sheets on the bed and one set as a spare. The rest have to go.

Books: Paper and audio. It's sad. Books hardly ever sell at garage sales--unless someone like me comes along. I'll probably have to donate them when the sale is over.

I found other things that will probably go on Ebay because they're too specific for the general public. Like our climbing gear. We'll likely never go rock climbing again and this stuff was expensive. Made me feel nostalgic when I found it. I loved rock climbing.

bouldering wall
I know we have a box of those hand holds to build a bouldering wall too, but I haven't found them yet.

It's kind of creepy to discover we had so much stuff in storage.

Have you ever emptied out a closet or drawer and gasped at how much you've kept? When was the last time you performed a purge?

No matter how this garage sale turns out, I know I'll feel better getting rid of all this stuff. Time for someone else to love it.

Prince Albert is adorable. I wish we were close enough to hit your garage sale. I love antiques and I need a couple small tables. But rock climbing hand holds? You were thinking of building a climbing wall? Where?
Your garage sale sounds awesome!

We just moved, and I still can't believe how much stuff we had/have. I'd always thought my husband and I were pretty good at not having too much clutter. Sigh. But we're definitely getting better at buying/keeping only things we really like/love.

I'd love to be at your garage sale. Only thing is, we no longer have a garage. We now have a spare room instead. Clearing it in preparation for the conversion revealed its TARDIS like properties. How could so much stuff have fitted in it? Good luck with the sale!

Linda: I have THREE end tables! Two of them are from high end stores too. I just don't use them anymore. (more room for dog traffic) :)

Madeleine: Buying only what we LOVE is what I learned too. I'm at a point in my life where I want to see only the things I love wherever I turn.

I did a HUGE purge back last summer, and we had that massive 6-family garage sale. There's enough stuff still to go through, though, that we're having ANOTHER garage sale in a couple weekends.

I wish I could come poke through your garage sale. Sounds like you'll have some awesome stuff.

Mike: Our garage sale is being held in Greg's workshop which is probably bigger than most people's homes.

Re: Tardis
I love this!!! Yes. Our house is definitely like a Tardis. It must be bigger on the inside otherwise we couldn't have saved all this stuff for so many years.

Rebekah: It's a collection 40 years in the making.

It's like going down Memory Road.

Linda: I forgot to mention the climbing wall.

We had a nice wall along Greg's shop at the old house, but he could've built it to be free-standing too. We were very big into rock climbing before all the injuries set in. It was my favorite sport ever.

I'm with you on the bedding. You don't need to make your bed into a fashion diva who always has something to change into! lol
I do the clean out thing pretty regularly. But with four kids, we have a lot of stuff.

Last purge was probably when we moved into this house, so that would be 1997. We have a lot of stuff we could probably get rid of. Just don't have the motivation to do it.
Maria Zannini said…
Diane: That was my feeling too. Years ago I used to be so fussy about matching and coordinating--now, as long as it feels good on my skin, I don't care. LOL.
Maria Zannini said…
Susan: And then you have to consider saving some stuff for when they move out and need starter furnishings.
Maria Zannini said…
Stacy: 1997 is a long time. Your stuff has been procreating regularly since then. :)

I try to go through things once a year to make sure we don't have too many things stored away. It has also helped that each time I've moved, I've pretty much started over, meaning the old home stuff was given away or sold so someone else could enjoy it.

Sounds like your garage sale is going to be of the epic size. Wishing you the best!

I hope you sell tons at your garage sale. Those clean sweep type sales are very freeing. We did that years ago before we moved into a furnished rental. Got rid of dang near everything. Then we did it again before we moved to Missouri - only then it was more giving things away than selling them. (Wrong time of year for a garage sale.) I do miss some of the stuff - like my box of old sci-fi paperbacks that ended up in the giveaway pile instead of the move pile. But all in all, I'm glad it's gone. Of course, since we got here, I've been re-hoarding. LOL

So true about books not selling at garage sales; I think since the advent of Kindle, etc., they just aren't as popular. I remember selling all my books out at previous garage sales and then even selling books on Amazon and doing quite well. It does seem like you have a lot of stuff, but that's good because it will draw people to come to the sale I think. People seem to like furniture or at least where I used to live they liked furniture.

LOL we were on a 4 year purge having lived in hubby's parents house who were just one shade away from hoarders. We figured either selling, giving away, throwing away, we got rid of over 30,000 pounds of stuff they had. I'm thinking we'll purge again when we move at the end of this year because some things we just brought along that we didn't have time to go through and I'm hoping they don't make the next move.

I call my husband a reformed pack rat, he's really trying to travel lighter these days :)

Good luck with the sale!

I always love watching people coming to them and seeing what they want to buy or look through.

Prince Albert is super cute! I hope his cousins arrive soon, but not in a storm. And wow, it sounds like you're going to have an awesome garage sale!
You're making me want a goat! He's adorable! :-)

We clear out things to take to donate to the animal shelter's thrift store on a pretty regular basis. We have a small house, and hubby has some hoarding tendencies, so it's best not to things pile up. Even with that, it amazes me how much we accumulate so fast.

Angela: We've been pricing and sorting for four days and we still have stuff in boxes. Without ever opening the doors we currently have a 24 x 30 foot area completely full and there's more to be put outside.

I hope I survive.

BE: That's what I'm going for. As I look around at all the stuff, there's really nothing I want back.

I want it gone.
Maria Zannini said…
Betty: I never thought of selling through Amazon. That's brilliant! Thank you!

Some of these books are classics.
Maria Zannini said…
Tyrean: Still no cousins! :(

They'll probably be born during the sale.

Danielle: Goats are a lot of work, but they make up for it with personality. Each one is unique too.

Re: shelter thrift store
Oh, wow! I wish we had one, I'd donate all my stuff.
