The Celebration Continues

We're still in holiday mode at the Zannini ranch. Today is Greg's birthday--a milestone birthday to boot.

His beard might be snowy white but to me he'll always be the 24-year old hunk showing off at the pool.

We've been through so much and it went by in the blink of an eye. We spent the last fifteen years as a long-distance couple--the most grueling fifteen years of my life. If that doesn't test you, nothing will.

It's been seven months since he retired and I'm still giddy knowing I wake up to him every day.

We usually celebrate birthdays by letting the guest of honor decide that day's events. He hasn't mentioned what he wants to do yet. Probably a movie, and dinner at a nice restaurant.

Independence Day 2015 was great! Greg barbequed. I made the side dishes and an awesome blackberry cobbler. I have to say it was awesome because I always mess up the pastry, but this time it came out absolutely perfect, flaky and delicious. I was shocked! The only thing I did differently this time was chill all my implements and ingredients.

Yesterday, we were weeding the garden and came across this.

These are baby bunnies in the middle of what used to be my snow pea bed. I couldn't bear to disturb them so I left the bed as is. Hopefully, they'll be weaned in a few weeks and move on.

So what do you like to do on your birthday? Is there anything special you wish someone would do for you?

I'd be happy if someone cleaned my house and fed the animals. I don't know what it's like to sleep in late.  (I so wish I was joking.)

My husband and I usually celebrate our birthdays together since they're so close - only two days apart. He's actually a year older but for those two days, we're the same age. :)

Enjoy the celebration!

Happy Birthday to Greg!

And yay for baby bunnies! So cute.

We don't really do anything for birthdays anymore. A card. I buy a cake. Maybe make something special for dinner. We stopped giving each other gifts years ago. And we like it that way. =o)

Madelyn: How cool that your birthdays are so close. I like the idea of sharing a birthday.
Maria Zannini said…
Linda: I will pass your birthday wish on to Greg.
Maria Zannini said…
Mac: Thanks, Mac. I'll let him know!
Maria Zannini said…
Sandra: Thanks, Sandra. Dinner out is a good treat for me too--especially because I don't have to clean afterward. :)

Mike: Thanks, Mike. I thank you, and the bunnies thank you. I checked on them this morning. Mama recovered them up with her fur, but she was long gone from the nest. They usually come back at night to nurse the babies.

BE: I don't even buy cards anymore. We stopped exchanging gifts many years ago. Better to take him shopping and get him exactly what he wants than me buying the not-quite-right gift.
I love birthdays, so I always try to make a big deal out of them. For my own, I like to get friends together and play boardgames, one of my fav activities.
Maria Zannini said…
Barbara: I love board games but it's not much fun if there are only two of us. We need to make more friends in our vicinity. Most of our friends live too far. :)
Bunnies are so cute when they're little. Having someone do all my chores would be a great gift for me also. Happy Day to your hubby.

Tell Greg happy birthday for me!

I like having cake on my birthday, but my husband never remembers (he remembers my birthday, though, because I don't let him forget!). I think it's because he doesn't want to eat cake. But I rarely get it anymore, so I want to splurge!

Cute bunnies! We used to have bunnies living under our deck. I haven't seen them for awhile (pretty much since we tore down our tree, which was next to the deck), so I'm guessing they found a better place to live.

Happy birthday to Greg!

On the topic of babies, I have fledglings EVERYWHERE right now - at least one each of cardinals, mockingbirds, brown thrashers, and robins. Sparrows and starlings don't count, lol.

Sadly, it means the dog only goes out with supervision for a while, because he killed a baby robin about a month ago. But it's warm enough now that he can't stay out too long anyway, especially since he won't sit in his wading pool. I'll sit in it instead.

Happy birthday to your husband! I hope however he celebrates it that he has a great day and a fantastic year ahead! How grueling with your 15 years as a long distance couple! Glad you guys survived it! Those bunnies were cute.

Usually for our birthdays the birthday person gets to pick where they want to go for dinner :)

Susan: I was none too happy that they chose to nest in my garden, but I have nothing there now so they're welcome to it. By the time I get ready to plant again, they ought to be old enough to move on.
Maria Zannini said…
Stacy: I'm a cake person too. It's not a real birthday unless there's cake.

Re: bunnies
They grow so fast. Within weeks they'll be ready to forage on their own.
Maria Zannini said…
Rebekah: Mine are curious, but so far Nana is the only one that brings me babies to look at. --then I have to find out where their nest was.

Re: wading pool
What? No ducks yet? LOL
Maria Zannini said…
Angela: Thanks, hon. I will pass your good wishes to Greg.
Maria Zannini said…
Betty: Thanks Betty. I will let him know!

Re: long distance
It was worth it, financially, but it was awful. It taught me how to be independent though that doesn't take the place of having your life partner by your side.

Happy birthday to Greg :)

and I hope you get a sleep-in someday, Maria
This is really sweet! I'm a romantic and my favorite real life romance stories are ones like this. Happy birthday to Greg! I'd say the two of you are very fortunate to have found one another.
Maria Zannini said…
Jenny: I do sleep a little longer now that he's home, but I'm always the one who gets up first. Such is my life. :)
Maria Zannini said…
Karen: We found each other very early in life too, so we have that much longer to appreciate what we have.

Happy Birthday to your hubby, Maria! I'm so glad you get to have him at home now :).

I'd want to be able to sleep in too lol. From our six, 8 week old Black Copper Marans, 4 ended up being cockerels and one of them let out his first (sad) crow today...so I don't think sleeping in is in my near future lol. Not that my kids or other critters would let that happen!
Maria Zannini said…
Rula: Oh, no! Not four roosters! That always happens. I'm always getting half girls and half boys. I hope you'll get some more chicks and try again. You'll definitely need more than two hens.

re: crowing
Their crows sound so pitiful when they're teenagers.
Rula Sinara said…
I know right? LOL. I'm now at 31 chickens (the roos included) of different breeds, but I really wanted some of those super dark eggs, so I'll definitely get more of the BCM chicks next year. For now, I'm hoping the two BCM girls lay some nice ones :).
Maria Zannini said…
Rula: The Marans really do lay exceptionally dark brown eggs. Mine are finally laying reliably now, but I still have one cannibal who eats her eggs. I haven't figured out who it is yet, but when I do, she's coming for dinner...as the guest of honor. :)

And yay baby bunnies!

For b-days around here, we just go out to a pricey dinner

Happy Birthday to Greg! Sorry I'm late to the party.

I never do anything on my birthday. I don't know why, I just don't. However, if I have an extraordinary day at some other time, I usually count that as my birthday day.

I hope your hand is better.
Maria Zannini said…
Sarah: Birthdays are the one time where I loosen the purse strings--even for myself!

Baby bunnies are still in their nest. Judging by their size, I imagine they'll stay put for at least four more weeks.
Maria Zannini said…
Anne: My hand is better, though I do wish it would finish healing. It's like it's reached a plateau. The redness and swelling hasn't dissipated any more. It's still very tight too. I've given up trying to unscrew bottles with my right hand. Too painful.

re: birthdays
Aww...you gotta do something nice for yourself, even if it's just dessert. When I lived alone I didn't do much, but I always bought myself dinner (and brought it home).
