Storms and Crashes
Last week, we had some pretty severe weather move through.
I pay attention to rain chances, but honestly, when weather forecasters say "severe weather" I kind of shrug it off.
Bad move, woman. This time it was serious.
It started innocently enough, some hard rain and thunder, and then came the ratta-tat-tat of hail.
We get hail occasionally, but it's usually the small stuff. This night, Mother Nature went for the grenades.
We were in the living room when I heard a crash in my study. A big chunk of ice crashed through two separate panes of polycarbonate.
Then the power went out.
We no sooner investigated the first crash when I heard another ice grenade hit the skylight over our breezeway. We've got five skylights, so two out of five isn't too bad.
Luckily, the rain stopped shortly afterward. It gave us time to seal up the hole for the one over my study until we could get people to replace the skylights.
The best part? We walked out to the greenhouse and found several chunks of ice sitting on the shade cloth. Had the shade cloth not been there, I might've lost the greenhouse. Talk about putting it up in the nick of time.
I was never so happy to have spent the money to build that shade cloth pavilion.
We called the contractor who installed our roof a few years ago. He should get the skylight replacements done pretty quickly. Our neighbors will probably need a new roof, but ours was virtually unscathed.
There's not much you can do in a hail storm, but duck and cover.
Do you get hail very often where you live?
