Out and About

I've been on the hunt for an appropriate pot for my future dragon fruit plants. If you've ever had to buy a pot you know how expensive they are.

For the last 40 years, most of my pots have been salvaged off curbs, or bought for a couple of bucks at garage sales.

Greg found an ad for these large bins made of resin. Originally, they were rain barrels, but they were missing their lids. The price was right too. Mature dragon fruit need very large pots so I was anxious to see how sturdy they were.

Unfortunately, when I saw them up close, they were way too big for my needs. I could plant full sized trees in those things.

It was a long way to go, but it was a pretty drive. As we were leaving, the lady mentioned she had empty molasses tubs for cattle. She was going to toss them, but we gladly gave her a $20 bill for all six.

The tubs were of various sizes, but the big ones were perfect for dragon fruit plants. The short, squatty ones were perfect for my ginger and turmeric plants. I was a happy camper.

Since we were out in the boonies we decided to explore and came across Ladonia Fossil Park. It's a spillway from the lake nearby. We only walked a short way since we weren't kitted out for wading in water, but the park has a "keep what you find" policy and that intrigued the scrounger in us.

People regularly find ammonites, arrow heads, and petrified plants. According to the web site, even the bones of mastadons and mammoths have been found.

I hope we go back soon. It was great fun just to walk around. From what I've read, Fossil Park's days may be numbered. There's a dam project underway. Once it's complete, the park will probably be under water. That makes me sad.

In other news: The Forever Stamp went up to 82 cents. That boggles my mind. Granted I don't mail as much as I used to but I still have to use stamps occasionally. I bought at least 20 packages of stamps when they first came out in 2007. They were 41 cents a piece back then--and I used to think that was high. LOL!

In nicer news, my kid sister came up with a fantastic idea for my mom's 93rd birthday. She asked all the family (and that's a lot of us) to contribute 6-8 photos of our families and our gardens. My mom loves gardening.

My sister plans to make a book with everyone's pictures. I thought it was a great idea.

Do any of you live where it's not hot this time of year? I may have to come visit you. 😎

Greg told me a joke he found on Facebook.

Someone asked what the temperature in August was like in Texas.

Answer: Have you ever been cremated?

That's about right.
